Meet Plus Size Fashion Blogger, Hollie of Pretty Big Butterflies!!!
Location: London, UK
How long have you been blogging? 2.5 years
What or who inspired you to become a fashion blogger? What led you to it?
My boyfriend saw that I read a few fashions blogs and encouraged me to reach out and create my own space. He knew I was looking for a creative outlet and also trying to gain a bit of confidence. He suggested it a couple of times and I brushed it off. Eventually I gave in and said I’d give it a go. I can’t thank him enough for pushing me to do it.
Do you blog full-time, for fun, as a hobby? Share your evolution!
I blog as a hobby and work full time. It’s pretty tough, and my evenings can be crammed, but I wouldn’t change it. I do what I enjoy and I’ve learned to balance it so it stays fun. I’m lucky that my corporate job really embraced it and supported it. (I’m currently on sabbatical for 4 months so it’s a blogging delight!)
What is your favorite asset? Your legs, arms, waist? How do you play that up?
I would say my face! The one thing that makes a difference to how I feel about myself is my eyebrows! I’m not sure how that happened. I don’t I have one thing in particular that I try to work. I just work it all at different times. I do kind of like my shoulders though… is that strange?!
What are the challenges, if any, you face regarding being plus size?
I find that most fast, affordable and fashionable brands only go up to a UK size 24 (US size 20). I’m on the cusp of 24/26 and it’s so frustrating. It’s like hey! I have money and a body… let me buy your clothes!
What’s your favorite thing about being plus size?
I love that there is a real plus size community in the UK where we support and encourage each other. Of course, there are always ups and downs but I feel like it’s really helping the fashion industry to recognize plus size women really are here. That we are fun, fashionable and deserve great fitting clothes too.
What’s your favorite thing about being a blogger?
So much. I mean so so much. The experiences I’ve had, the people I’ve met, the confidence journey it’s taken me on, and the messages I get from people saying I’ve encouraged them. That’s pretty special to be honest. I also met my bestie through blogging and that in itself is priceless.
Who/what are your favorite designers/brands?
This changes pretty often, especially with new ranges and designers coming out slowly but surely. In the UK I would say ASOS Curve, Boohoo Plus and I love Navabi because they let me buy plus size brands that are not necessarily in the UK.
Describe your personal style.
It’s girly with an edge. I’m a huge fan of florals but I can’t resist a slogan tee and ripped jeans. I’ve definitely learned that I don’t have to stick to one look or vibe. I can wear whatever I want.
Which bloggers inspire you? Plus or straight size! Any bloggers currently on your radar?
Danielle Vanier – because she pushes the boundaries of plus size fashion. She makes it fun, fierce and exciting. Chloe from Chloe Pierre LDN really inspires me too. She literally just does her own thing and I always want to have a sneak at her Instagram to see what she’s been up to. F
rom the US, Chastity from Garner Style really talks to me because she is closer to my size than a lot of other well known bloggers and being relatable is important for me. I love style inspiration and tips too.
What do you think about where plus size fashion is today versus a few years back?
It’s improving. Slowly. We have a lot more choices than we had 5 years ago, and those choices are better than ever. We are still on the blackfoot when it comes to offering plus size beyond a size 24. That needs major improvement.
What do you think or hear from readers, is one of the biggest myths about plus size fashion?
The biggest thing is not caring about other people’s opinions. Being plus size does not limit what you can and can not wear. The limits are within your own mind. I used to think I couldn’t wear a bikini. Why? Because I didn’t want people to see my stretch marks or rolls? Why? In case they made comments.
Well you know what, the last time I wore one, I heard zero negative comments. You want to know why? Because I was too busy having fun in the pool, splashing around and making use of the hot tub. Seriously, stop caring what others think and wear what you love. Most of the time, people just wish they were you, with ‘such confidence.’ So be you, and be wonderful!
Are you working on anything or have anything to share? Anything else you want The Curvy Fashionista’s readers to know?
I’m helping the The Curve Fashion Festival with their social media until the event so give them a quick follow or like. I’m also doing a bit of traveling over the next month, and one of the places I’m heading is Toronto, Canada. So if you know anywhere I should be visiting (plus size retailers!) give me a shout.
Lastly, what does Curvy.Confident.Chic mean to you?
It means loving who you are and owning it. Owning your curves, feeling confident and wearing what you love.
