Heyyyyyy, girl, Hey! So the universe was good to us, and we had the awesome opportunity to chat with Grammy Award winner, Chrisette Michele. *Inserts big smile here* I mean. Chrisette Michele has been on a roll lately and for her to take time out just to shoot the breeze with us? Geeked. Do you know who she is? Please tell me that you do!
As an entertainer and singer songwriter, the incomparable Chrisette Michele uses her powerhouse vocals on the new Milestone record to leave her audience blown away while redefining what it means to be a diva. Her newest music, laced with leather and diamonds, celebrates the sensuality of women who still believe in love. This recently engaged romantic is ready to dance and turn up the volume on what it means to be an entertainer.
And listen… We had a good ol’ conversation too. Homegirl is not easily swayed, Ohh-kay? The songstress made it very clear that she marches to the beat of her own drum, and if you’re not with it she’ll cut it (in my O.T. Genasis voice).
Describing her life as a miracle, I was able to get all in her business but only for a minute… Y’all know how I do, KMSL! The soon-to-be bride dished on a few things, including disregarding body labels, being very protective of her positive energy, and not being a fan of the banned Lane Bryant commercial. *Chile, fix yo face.*
As the songstress, readies to release her 6th studio album, ‘Milestone,’ she’s definitely living life and turning up with positivity! Let me hush, and let you get into it below.
Up Close and Personal with Chrisette Michele
Since your first album, ‘I Am,’ how have you grown to accept who you are as a person physically and mentally?
CM: I don’t know if I ever had a problem with that luckily. I think at the end of the day everybody grows and changes. I think within a 10-year period I have grown. I’ve always been very comfortable with myself.
You were stunning on the Ebony’s Body Brigade March issue. When you were first approached with the idea, did you have any fears of being rejected or slammed on social media because of your body? If so, how did you overcome that?
CM: No, I didn’t. Each girl had something individually to contribute. I remember Danielle running around the photoshoot and excited. Whereas Jasmine was timid, but she’s so bold in her music. But, she’s more demure, when it comes to sharing her body with the world. Gabi is more the feminist and fighting for injustices with the world. I was excited about sharing new music and being in a liberated space.
Let’s talk new music! You have a new sound for ‘Milestone’ are you afraid that some fans won’t receive it?
CM: I’m not a fearful person. I get asked if I’m afraid, nervous or scared and that’s not a space I’m ever in. At the end of the day, I’m an artist. I literally carry a canvas everywhere I go. I have a fun and upbeat life. For the people that enjoy it, I let them enjoy it but for people who don’t, I let them not enjoy it. I’m not afraid about putting out new music.
‘Milestone’ is set to be released soon, and I was able to attend the listening session at Clark University, a few months back. There are a few tracks that speak to embracing life and who you are. What do you want your fans to know about the importance of loving themselves?
CM: It’s such a big deal. You can’t love anybody else unless you love yourself. If you don’t feed yourself that positive energy, you can’t feed it to anyone else. A lot of times I want to encourage people to think about what’s good and to talk about it and make headlines about that. There are a lot of things that are going on that are good
Jazmine Sullivan recently spoke to the lack of diversity in the music industry, what is YOUR take as it pertains to curvy women?
CM: With girls like Meghan Trainor whose literally at the top of the charts, Danielle, or myself, I see them all the time. I think we spend a lot of time focusing on what we don’t see versus what we see. I see a lot of diversity. I see a lot of collaboration with white and black, curvy and skinny. I don’t identify with any of the terminology these days because it puts you in a box.
In my house there was never any pressure to be small. I didn’t know that I was curvy until I had my first magazine interview, and I was asked what was it like to be curvy. In my house, I just had hips. I know Jazmine was someone who had that type of struggle, whereas I wasn’t.
Not only are you doing music, but you have a play! The ‘Married but Single’ play appears to be a fave among so many. How has that experience been and seriously, how do you juggle wearing so many hats?
CM: It’s definitely a challenge. I incorporate a lot of Yoga within my day. I travel with a mat so I can relax. It’s a lot different than doing musical performances. We get excited when we get to cities like Detroit and they’re yelling back at us.
Girl! You have the Rich Hipster record label, clothing line, and you’re very active! What lessons have you learned about building an empire?
CM: It’s important to have positive people around me. I let go of people who can’t smile. I can’t be around people who are sad all the time. If you’re not positive, I just can’t do it. The energy has to be right. Again, so many things we can be down about and I can’t hear it all day. I’ve been around other people’s staff and I’m thinking, “Oh, my goodness is life that awful?” Also, being able to be taught and take instruction well. Communication in that way is key and people being able to respond. Having a positive attitude and a teachable spirit is very important.
